In a collaborative effort between the Center for Disability Research and Training (CDRT) and the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Center (ISLRTC), under the Ministry of Social Justice, the Sanket Sensitization Workshop took place on September 4, 2023, at the Academic Auditorium of Kirori Mal College. This unique event gathered 60 participants from various faculties of Delhi University with a singular mission: to foster inclusivity and enhance understanding within the deaf community in India. Sanket was not just another workshop; it was an endeavour to bridge the gap between individuals with hearing impairments and those without. The primary objective was to sensitise participants and equip them with basic Indian Sign Language (ISL) skills. These skills were intended to break down communication barriers and promote empathy and awareness.

The workshop kicked off at 3:00 PM with a warm welcome from CDRT members. The auditorium buzzed with anticipation as participants embarked on an enlightening educational journey. Followed by a comprehensive introduction to ISL -offering insights into its history and significance in the lives of those with hearing impairments – participants were enlightened about the vital role of non-verbal communication and how ISL plays a pivotal role in bridging this communication gap. Throughout the workshop, attendees delved into the basics of ISL vocabulary, learning common gestures and signs used in everyday conversations. Interactive sessions allowed participants to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice, honing their sign language skills. Additionally, they gained an understanding of deaf culture, etiquette, and the importance of respectful interactions.

What made Sanket truly exceptional was the presence of seasoned sign language instructors and members of the deaf community who generously shared their experiences, insights, and practical tips. This ensured that participants received a holistic and authentic understanding of ISL. In summary, the Sanket Sensitization Workshop held on September 4, 2023, at Kirori Mal College’s Academic Auditorium was a remarkable initiative aimed at promoting inclusivity and enhancing communication skills within the community. It not only sensitised participants but also empowered them with the tools needed to break down communication barriers, fostering a more inclusive and understanding society.
