Event: Workshop on Accessible Content and Assistive Technology in Higher Education
Organised by: National Centre for Assistive Health Technology (NCAHT), IIT Delhi
Venue: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi
Date: 3rd April, 2023
On 3rd April 2023, the Centre for Disability Research and Training (CDRT) members, including students and faculty, attended a workshop at the National Centre for Assistive Health Technology (NCAHT) at IIT Delhi. The workshop focused on Accessible Content and Assistive Technology in Higher Education, particularly for individuals with blindness and low vision. Led by Mr. Piyush Chanana, the workshop aimed to highlight the significance of making STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects accessible to students with disabilities, through innovative assistive devices and technologies.

The workshop commenced with an introduction to the importance of accessibility in higher education, emphasising the need for inclusive practices to ensure equal opportunities for all learners. Mr. Chanana showcased various assistive technologies and tools that can aid students with disabilities in accessing educational content and participating in STEM subjects effectively.

Inspired by the insights gained from the workshop, CDRT has initiated a dedicated team to spearhead a STEM project aimed at advocating for inclusive higher education policies. The project involves collaborating with IIT Delhi to develop a comprehensive policy document that will be presented to the government. This document will advocate for greater accessibility in STEM education for students with disabilities, focusing on innovative strategies and technologies to enhance learning outcomes and participation.

The workshop not only provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by students with disabilities in accessing higher education but also motivated CDRT to take proactive steps towards creating a more inclusive learning environment. The team is committed to driving positive change and advocating for policies that promote accessibility and equality in education for all.
