The Center for Disability Research and Training (CDRT) collaborated with the Department of English at Bhawanipur Education Society College, Kolkata, to organise a two-day National Workshop on “Disability Sensitisation” from 2nd to 3rd May 2023. The workshop aimed to discuss disability in the context of language, culture, literature, cinema, and gender, promoting a culture of disability allyship and inclusivity in higher education.

The workshop commenced with an inaugural session that highlighted the importance of understanding disability from a multidimensional perspective. Prof. Someshwar Sati, Prof. Banibrata Mahanta, and Prof. Shilpa Das delivered plenary sessions, discussing the representation of disability in various fields and fostering a deeper understanding of disability allyship. The day concluded with group discussions and reflections on the day’s sessions, encouraging participants to apply their learning in practical scenarios.

The second day featured technical sessions that delved deeper into the nuances of disability studies. Sessions on disability in language, culture, literature, cinema, and gender were conducted, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of disability
issues. The workshop also included interactive activities and case studies, allowing participants to engage actively and apply their knowledge in real-life situations.

The National Workshop on Disability Sensitisation at Bhawanipur Education Society College, Kolkata, was a resounding success, attracting 70 students and fostering a culture of inclusivity and empathy. The workshop’s multidisciplinary approach and expert-led sessions enriched participants’ understanding of disability, paving the way for a more inclusive society. The event highlighted the importance of disability studies in higher education and underscored CDRT’s commitment to promoting disability allyship nationwide.
