Event: ‘How To Conduct Sensitisation Workshops’

The Centre for Disability Research and Training (CDRT) at Kirori Mal College, organised an online discussion on January 19, 2024. Mr. Krishna Warrier from XRCVC, St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, led the session, exclusively conducted for the members of CDRT and Prayas, the Enabling Unit of KMC. The discussion delved into the intricacies of conducting effective sensitization workshops.

The session started with members contemplating the notion of disability and the prevailing needs, emphasising breaking ableist barriers for fostering an inclusive society. This set the stage for the importance of awareness and sensitization workshops. Mr. Warrier then introduced the key elements for a successful workshop: Immersion, Reflection, and Debriefing. Participants gained insights into the technical aspects of organising sensitization workshops, with emphasis on planning, incorporating the fundamental elements, and ensuring a comprehensive approach.

Mr. Warrier shared various strategies and tips to enhance workshop effectiveness. These included closed spaces to avoid disturbances, using humour to engage the audience, and offering incentives to attract more attendees. To hone their skills, members were encouraged to practise among themselves and engage in conversations with individuals with lived experiences of disability.

In the final segment, members posed questions that were addressed by Mr. Warrier, resolving doubts and concerns. Encouraging words from Mr. Warrier and Prof. Someshwar

Sati motivated members to embrace this new role of theirs within CDRT and Prayas. The session proved to be highly informative, providing a detailed understanding of sensitization workshop dynamics. Members were encouraged to take on the responsibility of conducting future workshops, contributing to the mission of creating a more inclusive and aware society.
