Report:
In March 2022, a Sign Language Awareness Workshop was conducted by the Centre for Disability Research and Training, Kirori Mal College in collaboration with the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice, Government of India. The workshop was organised with the intention of spreading community awareness about sign language and sensitizing the students with the experience of what it means to be deaf and was attended by 36 students of Kirori Mal College.

At the outset of the workshop, Dr. Abhishek Kumar Srivastava from ISLRTC, briefed the audience
about the functioning objectives of the centre followed by a comprehensive lecture on the medical
and cultural models of hearing impairment, the status of deaf education in India, and the challenges
pertaining to it. Illustrating his argument with practical examples, he also presented some viable
solutions to the current scenario, one being the adoption of ISL as a medium of instruction.

Thereafter, Mr. Islam-Ul-Haq and Ms. Sneha Tiwari conducted an interactive hands-on training on sign language, teaching the audience the basic greetings, pleasantries and words of daily use. The event was a little milestone on the road to realising the college’s collective dream to build a truly inclusive society with equal opportunities for all.
