SAMVEDAN

Disability Awareness Campaign

Individuals with disabilities face inherent challenges due to their condition, which are often exacerbated by societal attitudes and behaviours, such as stigmatisation and internalised ableism. These factors further limit their accessibility and participation in society. Although legislation exists to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, a significant barrier to their inclusion is the lack of community sensitisation. Insufficient disability awareness and a lack of training in inclusive education contribute to ridicule, mockery, bullying, and social exclusion, preventing the formation of a truly equitable society.

In response to these challenges, Samvedan, the sensitisation wing of the Centre for Disability Research and Training, is dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding and awareness of the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities. Our mission is to dismantle the barriers of ableism that contribute to the marginalisation of persons with disabilities and to bridge the gap between them and the broader community. This work is rooted in the principles of disability activism, which seeks to challenge and change oppressive structures and attitudes. Through a range of initiatives, including sensitisation and stimulation workshops, evocative performances, allyship programs, and comprehensive training about how to conduct workshops, Samvedan seeks to cultivate an inclusive and equitable society.

CDRT has successfully organised several impactful workshops, such as Anubhav, a sensitisation stimulation workshop; Sanket, an awareness workshop on Indian sign language; and Antarchakshu, which involved participants in activities that challenged their daily routines as a way to gain a first-hand understanding of disability and broaden their perception of it. Our vision is to create an environment where every individual, regardless of ability, is not only respected but deeply valued.

Jagriti

The Sensitisation Campaign

Jagriti is the disability awareness and sensitisation unit within Samvedan, tasked with organizing and conducting sensitisation and stimulation workshops. Our primary goal is to dispel fears and misconceptions surrounding persons with disabilities. We design these workshops around everyday activities that encourage participants to reassess their preconceptions about disability. We’ve successfully conducted impactful workshops at various institutions, including STGB Khalsa College, IIT Delhi, and St. Xavier’s College, demonstrating the diverse challenges and opportunities faced by persons with disabilities. Changing perceptions is as crucial as providing accommodations for the disabled. By bridging knowledge gaps and fostering dialogue, Jagriti strives to create an inclusive environment where every individual’s journey is not only recognised but celebrated as an essential part of our shared human experience.

The Performing Arts Club

Abhivyakti is the performing arts division of the Centre, focused on raising awareness and promoting sensitivity towards disability. Using the compelling mediums of theatre, music, and other performing arts, Abhivyakti confronts societal perceptions and highlights the stories and experiences of persons with disabilities (PWDs). Through immersive and thought-provoking performances, this initiative seeks to dismantle barriers, prompting audiences to reflect, engage, and take steps toward a more inclusive society. Abhivyakti blends art with advocacy, inspiring change with every performance.

Awaaz

The Activism Forum

Awaaz is a significant initiative under the Centre aimed at raising awareness and promoting a more accessible and inclusive society. It focuses on advocating for the everyday needs of persons with disabilities (PWDs), tackling key issues such as accessible transportation, infrastructure, education, and employment. In addition to its advocacy efforts, AWAAZ is dedicated to creating strong partnerships and nurturing a community of allies who are informed about and support the rights of PWDs. Through awareness campaigns and collaborative initiatives, AWAAZ is leading the charge to make accessibility a fundamental right, not just a privilege.
